Starting Aug 11, 2011, two trailpeak editors will be hiking the ancient coastal trails of the Southern Labrador Coast. Continuing from last year's trip when trailpeak editors mapped out over 50 trails from Gros Morne, Fogos Island, and the Tast coast trail (ECT), this summer's main destination is Labrador.
Trailpeak is the first media group to get access to a new network of trails steeped in Maritime history. Jodie Taylor and founder Kurt Turchan will hike from community to community to video, photograph, and GPS a series of trails. They'll be taking the ferry from St. Barbe, and, hiking from L'Anse Au Clair to Forteau, staying at the tallest Lighthouse in Atantlic Canada at Point Amour. The lighthouse has become a destination as well as a heritage research station.
Apart from the rich history dating back to Basque Whalers and First Nations, there is viking history along the way, and lots of natural attractions including whales and icebergs. The trip will be a full week of hiking and B&B hopping.
The landscape is sub-arctic so the trails will weave through a different coastal landscape than the team found in 2010. "It will be exciting" says Turchan, who enjoys combining hiking with history and culture. "We'll be taking an in depth look at the culture and history by walking the trails that have been used for centuries to link villages" says Turchan.
Stay tuned for daily (or close to daily) updates starting August 10th in the hiking section, as the hikers make their way up the Southtern Coast of Labrador. Look for the newest and featured trails, both on the home page, and, in the hiking section for Canada and Atlantic Canada. The team will busy writing up the day's adventure so other hikers can get a glimpse into what it's like to hike in Labrador from community to community.
