Film festival, Whistler's alpine extravaganza, get ready for ski season with this year's fresh crop of ski, snowboard, and crazy winter mountain adventure films. Not to mention the usual mix of mountain bike and other vids including world exchange, cultural, and mountain films of various kinds. Here's some of the juried categories to which films are being submitted.
borsos Award for best canadian feature ($15,000 cash award) Presented by the Directors Guild of Canada - British Columbia, Supported by Telefilm Canada The Borsos Award for Best Canadian Feature celebrates independent vision, original directorial style and the diversity of talent found in Canadian independent film. Up to eight feature films of new, narrative work by Canadian filmmakers will be eligible. For six years running, the Borsos competition entries have exuded the creative fire and artistry embodied by filmmaker Philip Borsos, known for his inspiring work on the Genie Award-winning films The Grey Fox (1982), and Bethune: The Making of a Hero (1990). All films must be Western Canadian Premieres. An international jury of three will award a $15,000 CDN prize. Past jury presidents include Ivan Reitman, Atom Egoyan, Donald Sutherland, Norman Jewison and Robert Lantos.
international feature competition ($10,000 cash award)? New for 2010, Whistler's International Film Competition showcases up to eight innovative and original narrative films from around the globe by directors with their first or second feature at the festival. In our quest to discover and celebrate new talent, the Award recognizes the unique perspective and cinematic integrity found in these fresh new voices. All films must be Western Canadian Premieres. An international jury of three will award a $10,000 CDN prize.
world documentary Award ($2,500 cash award) From the personal to the political, the World Documentary competition will showcase eight documentary feature films from around the world. With courageous viewpoints and a deep-rooted desire to explore, these films capture the human spirit in its many guises and often challenge us to look at our world from a new perspective. All films must be Western Canadian Premieres. An international jury of three documentary professionals will award a $2,500 CDN prize.??
international short film award ($1,000 cash award) Whistler's Short Film competition will showcase up to 40 short films (under 50 minutes in length) within three short film programs or coupled with our feature films. Presented with verve and limited only by their duration, these short films display the extraordinary talent, dynamism and creative exploration found in the work of some of the world's most interesting filmmakers. A jury will award a $1,000 CDN prize.
mountain culture award ($1,000 cash award)? Presented by Whistler Blackcomb Up to five films in the Whistler's Mountain Culture Film competition will be eligible for the Mountain Culture Award. As a reflection of the festival's unique setting, this award honours films from around the world that capture mountain places and experiences with a cinematic flourish. All films must be Western Canadian Premieres. A jury will award a $1,000 CDN prize.
