This is a great day hike or beginner trail for persons who are interested in alpine hiking. The first part of the trail takes you up an abandoned ski hill at Forbidden Plateau into Strathcona Park. There are steep portions at the start and near the top of the trail. Mt Beecher is fairly flat at the top and there are phenomenal views of the Comox Glacier, Georgia Strait and the coastal mountains. From Mt Beecher trail you can access many of the trails that lead into Strathcona park for multi-day adventures. The trail starts at the old parking lot of the Forbidden Plateau Ski hill. There is an alternate route over the Boston Bar ridge, however the trail there is not well marked, is steeper and takes you a few hours longer. Be sure to pack a lunch.
From Nanaimo head north on the Inland Island Hwy (Hwy 19) approx. 110 kms. Turn right on the second exit to Courtenay-Comox (Piercy Rd). Approx 1 km turn right onto Forbidden Plateau Rd. After approx. 4 or 5 kms the road will turn from asphalt to gravel and start to get steep. Follow the road to the top where it will terminate at the trail head You will see the concrete remnants of the old ski lodge.
