This family trail is 3 k.m. return located in Elk Island National Park. There are a lot of other trails and activities to do here.
From Edmonton, proceed east on the Yellow Head highway #16 to the north entrance, continue to Astotin Lake entrance and park across from the Golf Course visitor lot.
From Parking, follow the road north along the shore of astotin lake to the boardwalk where song birds, red neck grebes, geese and ducks are nesting with their young in the spring. Continue to the beach and picnic area then up the hill to the lookout point, where egrets, great blue herons, and white pelicans are in abundance for viewing and photographing. Continue to loop trail where you will observe bison, moose and mule deer, stop and enjoy the sitting area for a rest or lunch, should you had decided to pack one in. A little farther down the trail you will start to loop back to the loop trail entry and back out to the parking lot.
