This is a slightly longer approach to Mt. Braden from Camp Thunderbird via the "Wonder Trail." Park on the east side of Glinz Lake. Follow the Thunderbird Trail up Ayum Creek for about 45 min. You will pass signed junctions for Ragged Mountain, Alder Road and a couple for "Real Ragged" Mountain. Pass them all. Turn right at a signed junction toward Veitch Creek and Mount Braden. (Turning left leads to Shields Lake and Harbour View Road.) Follow this clear, nicely brushed trail over fairly flat ground, passing a trail leading south ("Secret Trail" to Hammer Mountain) and a pretty bog on your left. As you approach the obvious dropoff into Veitch Creek, take a right and head down. (Going left might lead to a road behind the Humpback Reservoir - didn't try it.) Once the trail crosses the creek, you can either veer left to climb Braden from the north side, or carry on down to a second flagged trail that heads up from the southwest. These make a nice natural loop. There could be another trail down from the summit toward Highway 14, but I didn't notice it. Following Veitch Creek would get you there soon enough, and if you left a car or bike this could be a traverse instead of a backtrack to T-Bird. Awesome little trip, very secluded with gorgeous forest, mossy meadows and good views of Sooke Hills and distant ocean / Olympic Mountains.
From the Sooke Road, take Glinz Lake Road. At the top, stay right and park beside the lake.
