Over the past few years the Ledgeview area has been developed into a virtual mountain bike park. This central Fraser valley 500 metre hill (McKee Hill), has been transformed by the local mountain bike community into an area networked by snakey, smooth, singletrack providing great cruising and other trails with the technical difficulties of challenging stunts. The loop riding here is varied, fun, short and extremely worthwhile. You'll want to do laps, for sure. A mixture of old doubletrack that previously existed as old skid and 4x4 roads provides access to the summit and challenging singletrack wanderings. All motorized road activity has been stopped by concrete barriers which makes this area especially appealing to ride.

McKee is one of the most southerly foothills of the mountains that make up the Coast Ranges to the north. Its geology is the result of glacial compression. The sandstone and conglomerates that predominate have been deposited by various glacial advances, the last being about 10,000 years ago. The conglomerates contain a matrix of pebbles and sandstone that have been compressed to the consistency of concrete. The traction on this surface is great even when wet. Beware however of the pure sandstone rifts which are about as smooth as a baby's bottom. When wet, these are deadly. Algae have penetrated the surface making it super slick.

Park above Ledgeview Golf Course near the water tower. The main primitive road starts on the south side of the road and leads to the summit in 3 Km.

The Buttafuoco Trail is one of the old standbys of Ledgeview and has been renamed and split into several different trails. Two in particular right off the summit: Little Butt which is easier and to the right, and the difficult start of Main Butt off to the left.
You'll know you're on the short Main Butt because it starts with a steep drop leading to an even more dramatic several metre plunge over a conglomerate overlap. These technical challenges are the crux of the ride. Both Butts converge into Upper Paper Route
Excellent viewpoints show Sumas Prairie and Mt. Baker.

Take care here, for the viewpoint is directly below a chute and not fenced. Should you not stop, this ultimate drop will have you marveling at the view while airborne. The elevation loss over the cliff is more than 200 metres which should give you about 4 seconds to locate a good place to crater. Continue left traversing around the McKee's north side (Upper Paper Route to Lower Paper Route - part of Old Buttafuoco) through beautiful deciduous forest. The trail descends with roots, logs, small drops and chutes providing technical challenges. Don't consider this ride if it is wet unless you like wipeouts. Buttafuoco was a slimy New Yorker; at times this trail can be a real pig-dog. When it's dry it might be called the Buffa-fuoco.

Approach

From Vancouver travel Hwy 1 (Trans-Canada Hwy) and take the
Sumas Exit 92 and turn right toward Mission. Travel 1.3 km and turn right. In 2 km at the top of the hill take the Old Clayburn Road exit and turn right. Follow Old Clayburn Road for 2 km and turn right onto McKee Way. Turn left on to McKee Road at the top of the hill. Follow McKee uphill past the Ledgeview Golf Course for 2 km and park.

Ride

0km 200m Head right onto a primitive skid road and travel uphill

0.5km 250m Keep right and follow the main skid road

2.8km 450m Grassy meadow

3.0km 500m Summit left to Buttafuoco.

By colnago888Posted By: colnago888  - Tue Feb 19 07:35:05 UTC 2013 Not Rated Question hi guys: new to this post. Thinking of joining the toonie ride. I have an all mountain Spesh 26" Stumpy EVO with 4.5" travel front and rear. I also have a 29er HT. I have done the Delta shed on both and find that the HT is fine, but i was hoping I can ride the HT on the toonie ride? anyone have any opinion on whether a full suspension or a HT would be appropriate? thanks!

I just hike to the top, and ride to the bottom as fast as i can catching some sweet air on the way. definitely a place a rookie with some experience can go to freshen up on his/her skills. Downside STINGING NEEDLE!! if you don't have a strong pain tolerance then wear some long sleeves and gloves or armor.
BRING LOTS OF WATER!! cause its a long hike, in (my) opinion.
and most definitely beware of some jumps... they WILL launch you higher and further than you expect, and being surrounded by stinging needle doesn't help.
last but not least....I have seen Devils Club plants near some trails...you've been warned.
Comment since i live about 20 min away i up here almost every weekend. this place is definitely a gorgeous place to ride and id be extremely PISSED if it were shut down. DON'T RUIN IT!!!!
By betterthanchocolatePosted By: betterthanchocolate  - Mon May 17 19:20:38 UTC 2010 Not Rated Upside Very close to town, it is pretty much in town. Great to live here.
Great Trail for all levels, the main access road can be very user friendly when introducing young children and the upper trails specilally the 1sth to the right as soon as you get to the communications tower site is possibly the best begginer trail. If you need anything more challenging follow any trail to the right of this main trail after the view point make sure you are past the view point first and the trails are more challenging. Great freeride park like trail lost of small to plain crazy (for me anyway) jumps.
Downside Long pedal up main access road has some very steep sections. XC bikes fair best uphill. You will walk/push your big bike up to get to the top. Comment I have a lot of fun either on my big bike ( puffing all the way to the top) or on on my all mountain which is light!!!

XCellator -one of the newest trails
enter off the second lookout of the cliffs.
Scenic, steep, you are on the S. side of the cliffs.
XCellerator could easily be called " 27ways to whip your lover" 27switchbacks,lots of these are climbing ,oh the pain. long, some very challenging chutes and bridging.
This trail was made with xc racers in mind though to me ,it's very freeridish...
Downside Not recommended you go alone.
Very steep and a couple of exposed lines.
Not for beginners.
Exits onto the junction of Flintstones,
continue S. on the junction which the sign says " autobahn" this trail skirts the mtn till coming out onto Viccaro ranch area. Go W.under the power lines (RoadGapCity area ) till a single track N. takes you back
up Ledgeview.
Comment Bolderdash -a junction of Flintstones, has been wiped out by some huge boulders.
Spawn of Bolderdash has just been built to skirt the slide.
hard to get lost on ledgeview and trails continue to sprout up here.
Some sweet jump trails, caution look before you leap.

Great ride but as many say kind of slippery cuz it was moist. lots of variety great forests, and a nice steady grind up. Downside STINGING NETTLES!!! We were warned but didn't have armor so we paid a bit of a price. Was wet so lots of slippery aeaas. Comment Goin back when its a dry week, nice area with lots to explore. Hoping further development doesn't happen.

Downside Long steep climb...push -a -bike...to the top but more then worth the effort when your flying back down. Comment The trails circle the mountain which extends the ride down......

Downside It's private land and we may loose our playground one day, and when that day comes it will definetly be a down side Comment Hats off to Gary and other trail builders in the valley that continue to transform the fraser valley into the mountian biking mecca that it is CANADA FUKIN RULES!!!

The climb to the top should take the average rider about 20-40 minutes. Usually lots of people around, so if you don't know the trails (which are quite hidden) ask, and maybe you can hook up with a small group. Downside Can get very busy. Also, after lots of rain, some of the trails are clay-based, so they can get very slippery. One last point; real estate developers are demolishing this mountain as we speak, yanking out the forests for big shiny ugly houses. Get in there while its good...there are already huge swaths being cut out of the side of the mountain. Comment Ledgeview is a great, very convenient escape for bikers in Abbotsford and its surrounding regions. The climb to the top is fairly painful, but the reward is that there are lots of cool options on the way down. Be sure to check out Paper Route, Speedway and Wasps' Nest, all of which are signed trails and are easy to find, because they all link off of Buttafouco at some point. Lots of ladders, bridges and rock faces to ride. Quite a bit easier than most trails at Seymour or Fromme, but a fun place to go nonetheless.
