After being turned away from doing some mountain biking in Kootenay Park because of forest fires in early August, a helpful warden at Kootenay Crossing suggested some trails at Edgewater just north of Radium and what a choice it turned out to be.
Once I found the trailhead, I started peddling along the most obvious path and there are many in this area and in about 2 km I was surprised to see a lake appear before me--a signpost indicated its called Baptiste Lake. There are no developments at the lake but lots of imposts so I suspect someone is preparing a development. The lands are private but no signs are evident. These trails are apparently used for cross-country skiing in the wintertime. They are on a bench so there are no major climbs and there is an assortment of old roads etc. The trails aren't marked but are easy to follow. From the far end of the lake I continued another 2 km until I came to a large hay field and it being about 40C I felt it was time to turn around and head back to the trailhead. In cooler weather one could explore the area in greater detail. It does look possible to navigate around the lake.
Drive north from Radium junction on Highway 95 for about 11 km until you come to the village of Edgewater. You will see a sign indicating a cross street--this should be Hewitt Rd. Turn right and continue up until you past Lautrap Rd. You will see an obvious clearing and parking area on your right. This is the trailhead. Once parked, take the road straight ahead. The trails on either the left or right will get you to the lake but its longer and steeper.
