This is a fairly short and steep trail (elevation gain of around 600 meters in 5.5 km) so the start of the trail is primarily switchbacks. The climb seems relentless, but it eventually tapers off to a steep downhill that leads to a small lake filled with brown trout. The views are spectacular, but a guide book or topo may be needed.
Current conditions:
Directions:
Highway 11 west of Rocky Mountain House. Go past Nordegg until you see a large blue lake on your left (Abraham Lake). About halfway down the lake (it's a huge lake) you will see a sign that points up the mountain and says "Allstone's Lake". Park in the staging area across the highway.

Upsidegreat views and challenging to you legs. a good 3 hour hike. the lake is a great spot to chill before returning back.
Downsidethe trailhead is hard to find when going west on highway 11 and the lake is really a big puddle.
Commentthis trail may be getting kinda popular, especially on long weekends, so pick an off season trip if you want some quiet time.

UpsideOnce at the lake you have a chance to climb to the top of Allstones Ridge.
DownsideA hard steady climb to the lake. In the trees for the most part.
CommentI enjoyed the hike to the top of Allstones Lake if you come in from Mud creek which is 2km east of Allstones Lake trailhaead on highway 11. When we did that there was five waterfalls on Mudcreek. You follow Mudcreek all the way up then ot forks take a left and keep going. Once the creek ends there is Allstones ridge in front of you. Then you hike up the right side of the notch and then curl up the backside of the ridge. Youi will see a bowl with big boulders countinue on and will see the lake. ( you may stop first and climb to the top of Allstones ridge which is a spectacular view)
