This past week I had a chance to explore the backcountry of Gros Morne. Starting at Berry Hill campground, 5 minutess north of the town of Rocky Harbour, I began my glide across the coastal lowlands that stretch along the north shore of the park. Moose, caribou, coyotes, and rabbits are a common sight along the trail, that winds in and out of several protected tree stands that separate the windswept bogs and ponds. With the Long Range Mountains providing the backdrop for the 9km run to Baker's Brook Pond, there are plenty of photo opportunities to be had. I spent the night at the backcountry ski chalet operated by Park's Canada at Baker's Brook Pond. Nestled in the shadow of Baker's Brook Gorge and the Rocky Harbour Hills, this beautiful cabin offers a welcome refuge from the elements. The cabin offers all of the pleasures of home (propane ovens and lights, indoor toilet, ect) but still maintains the feel of a rustic wilderness cabin. It provides a great base camp for all kinds of exploring, and at $30 a night or less than $150 for a group it's a steal of a deal. I was up early the next morning so I could snowshoe to the top of a nearby ridge so I could get some good photo's of the gorge. I was surprised, and a little startled to see two sets of tracks, coyote and bear heading along the pond, letting me know that spring really is almost here. The conditions for my return trip were ideal. Light winds and a hard crisp top to the snow slowed me to ski out in record time. I'm pretty sure that I'll be back next year, but I'll be staying for more than one night!

from Port aux Basques ferry. Follow TCH east to Deer Lake. Take route 430, also known as the Viking Trail and follow it to Wiltondale (3.5hours)
There is a regional airport located in Deer lake (1 hour drive)
