Barn Island is a great place from which to kayak Little Narragansett Bay, Fisher's Island Sound or the Atlantic Ocean. The water is fairly tame here and also provides a good starting place for aspiring kiters and windsurfers.
It also has a very nice hiking loop that meanders through wetlands on a farm road and returns via the upland woods.
In the winter, use this same loop with a set of cross country skis.
Directions:
From RT 95 in Southeastern CT
Take exit 91 to merge onto CT-234/Pequot Trail toward Stonington Borough/No. Main St
Turn left at Stonington Westerly Rd/US-1
Turn left at Green Haven Rd
Turn right at Palmer Neck Rd
Continue to end of road - parking on left for hiking, at boat launch for kayaking.
