One of the most visible Alberta fire lookout towers can be seen from below if you know precisely were to look. Trail follows the old fire road. There are connected trails in the area so it's possible to do complete loops.
Firelook out is 600 meters from High point of Prairie View trail. This is an active Lookout.
Great views in all directions from the top. Including you can see Calgary to the east.
Current conditions:
Directions:
Parking area west off Highway 40 at Barrier dam, north end of Barrier Lake.
Head across the dam at north end of Barrier Lake, turn right at Y junction. Keep right at T junction, then immediately turn left onto old Lookout Access road. Begin a steady ascent. It's over 600 meters up.

UpsideThe Barrier Lookout provides specatcular views of the Bow Valley and it is not an awfully long way from the car
DownsideUntil you get close to the lookout, the trail is deep in the forest and you do not see anything but forest.
CommentA good outing for early and late season. I'd rather do this with a bike as it is a long slog through the trees

CommentTake Jewell Pass back down to lake. Makes it cooler on a hot day.
