One of the most visible Alberta fire lookout towers can be seen from below if you know precisely were to look. Trail follows the old fire road. There are connected trails in the area so it's possible to do complete loops.

Firelook out is 600 meters from High point of Prairie View trail. This is an active Lookout. Great views in all directions from the top. Including you can see Calgary to the east.

NTS Map: 082O03

Elevation Gain: 625 m (2,051 ft).

Directions:

Parking area west off Highway 40 at Barrier dam, north end of Barrier Lake.

Head across the dam at north end of Barrier Lake, turn right at Y junction. Keep right at T junction, then immediately turn left onto old Lookout Access road. Begin a steady ascent. It's over 600 meters up.

A little steep towards the end. We took 4 hours while doing a loop through Jewel pass and taking loads of pictures. Can easily be done in 3 hours too. Excellent views on all sides. Downside Can get a bit crowdy on a good day. Start early in the morning to beat the rush.

Comment A good outing for early and late season. I'd rather do this with a bike as it is a long slog through the trees

Makes it cooler on a hot day.
