Beavertail is a playground on the water. The best place to launch is on the Western side of the point in the second parking lot. From here you can walk down some of the rocks to launch off a gravel beach. You then have to paddle out through a relatively small opening, about 15 feet, to make it to the ocean. Be careful here. In large surf there is a vicious break immediately to the right of the opening.

If you are feeling adventurous you can launch off the top of the cliff and slide off to an 8 foot drop in to the water. Do this in white water boats only; full size kayaks don't ride this as well (speaking from experience here).

Once you make it out of the opening there is a plethora of breaks to surf and rocks to play in. About 100 yards off of the point by the first buoy there is a an underwater rock that causes the swells to peak up for the perfect long boat wave, then fizzle out before breaking again on the rocks. On the western side there are plenty of small beaches to explore; small openings in the cliff lead in to almost private beaches (beware the skinny dippers). On the eastern side of the point there are some great breaks and rock gardens to play in.

You can spend hours here, but make sure you are off the water before sunset. The park is closed at sunset and they will ticket you.

This is not an area for beginners so please make sure you have the proper gear and knowledge before attempting to paddle here.
