Description

NTS Map: 082J11

Elevation Gain: 70 m (230 ft).

A very nice walk that starts up an abandoned logging road and quickly leads into a thick forest (about 15 minutes of moderate uphill). You will cross the river on a footbridge. There is a bench at the top of the hill where you can sit down and enjoy a view of the valley. On the way down you will arrive at Warspite Lake with cool towering rock walls. Interpretive bruchures can be found at the trailhead.

Current conditions:

Directions:

From Hwy 1, take the Hwy 40 exit and head south for about 50 km. Turn right (west) onto the Kananaskis Lakes Trail. Drive 2.2 km down this road and turn right (south) onto the Smith-Dorrien/Spray Trail (also known as Hwy 742), and drive for 8 km to the Mt. Black Prince Day Use area.

The interpretive trail brochure is very interesting and the whole was is very enjoyable. Downside Warspite lake is a very nice place, don't get me wrong. However, it is more like a puddle nowdays. In addition, getting here requires 7 km of driving on a very dusty gravel road with numerous big rocks. Comment An ideal hike for a hot summers day as is provides lots of shade. It is also less crowded owing to the gravel road. Very enjoyable.

Comment Posted some photos from July 08, 2007. Warspite still had water which just made the trip that much better.
