Boom Lake is a classic Banff cross country ski outing.
The trail gently ascends from the highway to the lake. It is a fast and fun ride back with gravity doing half of the work.
This is a popular trail so careful not to run anyone over on the way down!
There has been a slight re-route of the trail to go through the forest rather than across the tail end of an avalanche run. I didn't see anything on the entire trail that would make me the slightest bit worried unless we had a brazillion feet of snow some year.
In winter please check the Avaluator(Online Trip Planner) rating is: Challenging. See more trip planner route details here.
Directions:
There is a parking area at the trailhead, located on the Radium Springs highway 6 kms west of Castle junction.

UpsideWorth the hike for the beautiful view.
DownsideSome hungry mosquitoes if you stop too long on parts of the trail.
CommentVery nice wide trail and the lake is awesome! Did this late in the afternoon. Seen a handful of people going the opposite direction on our way up. Only another couple on our way up and they were leaving by the time we reached the lake. We were the last ones in the parking lot!

CommentThe lake was very beutiful. We saw about 5 other people there. It was cool by the lake so I suggest if you go bring gloves. I sw a marmot and a vole when I went. The trail is fairly easy but if it has rained alot in the past then wear rubber boots! You can't hear the highway so that is a plus.Aproxemety 3 hours.

UpsideGood access, fun rolly trail. Got lucky with great snow today.
DownsideA little easy & short (10-11km return)
CommentFun ride back down, wish it was 2x longer. Cloudy day so don't know about the scenery. The Alpina Control Edge (light B/C, steel edges, nnn BC bindings) were PERFECT for these conditions.
