Description

Britannia bay is steeped in history from when the Ottawa Boating Club operated at the turn of the century, fielding Canada's only Gold Medal winner to the 1936 berlin games.

Since then, this large body of water and it's often windy days are host to two sailing clubs, these are the Ottawa area's strongest winds.

Some days, standing at the end of the bay, the stormy winds feel like they can lift you right off the ground. Perfect conditions for Kite Boarders and windsurfers who launch from a special 2nd beach at the end of a long rock pier at the end of the parking lot to Britannia Beach.

Britannia Beach is a large public sand beach area, but on any given day, you can spot at least two kites, often-times half-a-dozen or more on windier days.

The waters are quite shallow on either side of the pier/spit, allowing beginners to wade in shallow water. The west side of the pier is quite muddy however.

Winds are generally NorthWest, and, this allows for some excellent kiting and surfing.

We'll post some web-cam links shortly.

Directions:

On thwe Ottawa Queensway, take the Pinecrest exit and go all the way North a few km past the Carling intersection, down into Britannia park.

Go to the end of the parking lot, where you will generally see windsurfers and Kiters parking as close to the launch beach (2nd beach) as possible.

Stay tuned for lots more images from this eastern haven for Kiting and Windsurding.

Downside Boat traffic from nearby sailing club Comment The pier (jetty) at Brtiannie beach leads to a smaller windsurf/kite beach that is ideal to launch from, and away from the swimmers/main beach. This is the windiest spot on the Ottawa river, on any given day with decent wind you'll see several kites, winter or summer. Easy access, off 417 and Pinecrest, follow to Britannia Beach far parking lot.
