Back in 1991, the winter Canada Games were hosted in PEI. That event brought forward the construction of Brookvale Ski Park, a Provincial Park in the central region of the province.
The construction created both an alpine ski center and a nordic ski center.
Brookvale has 25.5 Kilometers of groomed recreational trails, along with 7.5 Kilometres of competitive trails and biatholn courses. The Nordic site provides a complete rental shop, lodge, biathlon range and toboggan hill. There are also heated wax huts and the latest in trail grooming equipment. Just over two kilometers of the trail is lit for nighttime skiing. A night skiing program is run once a week and visitors are more than welcome to join. There are a number of events throughout the winter including moonlight skiing, the Nordic Festival, school ski day races, and the annual Loppet. The "loppet" is one of the more popular events. All these amenities makes Brookvale, PEI the destination of choice for x-country skiing in the Maritimes.
the following trails have been made on the site:
Canada Games Maple Leaf Trail 7.5Km (black diamond)
Paul's Plunge Loop 1.6 Km (black diamond) Plantation Trail 4.6Km (easy)
Hardwood Trail 4.3 Km (intermediate)

UpsideThere is a big sign out front that says Parks PEI Brookvale Nordic and in Spring to Fall "MTBing and Hiking Trails". Coming from Confed Bridge, if you find the Alpine hill and lodge you have gone about 1 km too far.
DownsideNo GPS but soon!
CommentContingent with the construction of the Plantation and other new XC ski trails several years ago - many km of MTB singletrack were added including the basic annual Red Mud Race course that is about a 9 km loop. There are additional offshoot loops and the signage is usually OK. You are never far from the lodge, somewhat like Hardwood Hills Ontario. You can ride it easy or hard but everything is rideable and nothing extreme - in 2005 a few raised tracks and teeters were built and plans for more fun infrastructure for 2006 are in the works. Parks PEI supports the summertime use and it is open all the time with the lodge open on special occasions. There are regular rides, check with Smooth Cycle or Cycling PEI.
