Burns Lake (Hidden Bay)

From your put in off Stearns Subdivision Rd., paddle East (left) for about 1 km, then explore islands and bays as you head South (right). Now head back West (right) till you see an old boat on shore. This is the entrance to Hidden Bay located on the Southern shore of Burns Lake, about 6 kms west of the lake's the eastern tip. (Burns Lake is about 25 kms long and stretches east from the town of Burns Lake)

With high water you can take the long way by paddling Hidden Bay to the far end then head North (right) through a small channel. Once in the next bay, look North (left) for another small portage channel.

In low water, stay North (right) when you leave the old boat. The portage channel is now on the right. A sloppy portage (100 ft) comes out at the bay directly across from where you parked.

The wildlife you may see include beavers, moose, bears, birds, deer & fish of course.

This is a nice little loop in high water conditions or if you want to do the wet 'n sloppy portage, otherwise go back out the way you came in. If done as a loop the total distance is about 5 kms; if backtracking probably about 8 kms total.

Directions:

To get to the town of Burns Lake take Hwy 16 West from Prince George about 150 kms or so. The town of Burns Lake is at the western end of the lake on Hwy 16, so from the town head East & turn South (right) on Stearns Subdivision Rd. If coming from the Vanderhoof/Pr. George direction of course you will be heading West on Hwy 16 & will turn left (S.) on Stearns Subdivision Rd. Either half way or at the end of the road are empty (private)lots to launch from.
