In the Havre du Maison region, a local
attraction is Butte Ronde, a steep hill with a
cross raised on its high point. The cross was
erected in 1913 and a rather difficult though
short 1.5K trail takes you both straight up,
and then around its back side, and back to
the parking area. A rope hand rail has been
put in place to assist this very steep climb, as
the path makes a B-line for the top. No one
thought of switch backs.
What a spot for a siesta! The cool off shore
breezes combining with mid summer
afternoon sun, make lying on the grass as
attractive as the views of both the rugged
coast line, the hillocks and pasture land.
The return down the back is equally a fun
ride. Steep sections combine with gentle
curves through grasslands and a short stand
of stunted forest growth. This is a fun,
though technical little trail.
