The C & O Canal was originally built for frieght transport, but now it is a quiet flatwater route perfect for novice kayakers. Boat rentals are widely available in the area -- including EMS Arlington, located just two miles away -- for non-owners. Watch for turtles along the canal in the late afternoon.

Also, running alongside the C & O is a flat trail for runners who prefer to avoid hard pavement and traffic crossings.

*Shouts out to veteran EMS guide extraordinaire Jamie Baker for this trail description!

Directions:

Just north and west of the Key Bridge, there is a small park off Canal Street NW, which sprouts off of M St NW as you travel west from downtown Georgetown. There is an easy put-in/pull-out spot there, but limited parking. Further west there is a second lot, but putting in there can be hairy.

Sorry directions weren't available. Please check the bottom of the description.
