Formerly a fire access road, this wide gravel trail leads into the wild Cascade Valley. This trail is open to both hikers and mountain bikers although mountain bikers can only travel as far as 14 kilometres up the valley. Residents of Banff will often choose this ride for a nice day outing. Hikers have a number of options for continuing into the backcountry of Banff from here.
In winter please check the local avalanche conditions and bulletins.
Banff National Park. The trailhead is located at the Upper Bankhead parking lot just outside of the town of Banff on the Lake Minnewanka Loop Road.

UpsideClosest of Banff NP trips, fireroad (XC skiing), trackset, scenic. a blind monkey couldn't get lost on it DownsideFireroad (MTBing) Dodging bighorn sheep poop. Sometimes busy. The 4 brazillion dollar solar powered biffy at Minnewanka parking lot is never in service... WTF? CommentI've XC'd this several times over the past couple years. Good conditions, scenery, tracksetting, a recommended ski.
