Description

The Catoctin Mountains stretche almost 40 miles from southern Pennsylvania across Maryland, and into the northern portion of Virginia. Backcountry camping is not permitted anywhere along its route, you can stay in the Manor Area Campground in Cunningham Falls State Park, making it possible to traverse the trail during a two-day outing.

Directions:

Drive northward from Frederick on US 15 to close to 20 miles and turn west onto MD 77 near Thurmont. Stop in at the Catoctin Park Visitor Center 4.0 miles later to inform personnel that you will be leaving an automobile overnight at the parking area outside Owens-creek campground, across from the old sawmill. Drive Park Central Road northward from the visitor center, following its twists and turns through the park and past several trailheads, Several miles later, cross Manahan road, soon making a right turn onto Foxville-Deerfield Road. About a mile later turn left onto Owens Creek Campground Road to leave one car at the sawmill parking area.
