The Charles River Bike Path (AKA The Dr. Paul Dudley White Bicycle Path) is designed for human-powered use, such as cycling, running, rollerblading, strolling, etc. The path follows the banks of the Charles River, and makes about an 18 mile loop between Boston and Newton. The most renowned section of the path is the area from Boston’s Esplanade (where the infamous July 4th Boston Pops concerts take place) running to the area around Harvard University in Cambridge. One may traverse any of the bridges that cross the Charles to shorten the loop at any point. While conditions of the path have improved of late (the section near the Boston University bridge was recently reconstructed), the best sections are in Boston/Cambridge proper. After that point, things can get a little less defined and more dicey. As Boston seeks to correct its less-than-bike-friendly reputation, increased focus has been put on improving cycling access. The Charles River path has great views of the river and, from the Cambridge side, the Boston Skyline. Take care though to keep at least one eye on the path for others; it’s a very busy and popular route.
