A diverse geographical river, with a good combination of lake travel and river paddling. Good, deep-channel runs and ample opportunity for up or downstream ferry's and eddy-turns. Offers a wide variety of rapid layouts that make it interesting.
Directions:
You travel Hwy 17E from North Bay Ontario or Hwy 17W from Ottawa to Rolphton Ontario. Turn on Swisha Road and continue to Rapides-des-Joachims Quebec. Here you would continue your journey by air. There are no roads available - fly in is your only option. You would book your flight in advance. Provisions for pick-up shuttle service is available.

UpsideA true character builder.
DownsideRained for 4 days, non-stop.
CommentCompleted a trip of the Coulonge River at the end of April. Water levels were very high (higher than some of the portage trails). We were left with no choice but to run the rapids or ferry from side to side. Wet suits probably saved our lives as there was still snow on the shore. The most physical and emotionally draining trip (and thing) I have ever done.

UpsideCoulonge is a beautifule river. With lots of moderate (CII) rapids and camping on shore or sand bars in mid river depending on water level.
DownsideCar shuttles are available, but long and some one has started an ATC road up the side of the river.
CommentOne of the better river trips in the area. Don't try the portages over to the Noire that Hap Wilson describes in his book, they don't exist.
