NTS Map: 082A13

Elevation Gain: 685 m (2,247 ft).

It is a gradual climb of 2300 feet, and includes waterfalls, a natural tunnel in the rock, a cliff traverse and of course Crypt Lake. (I am told this is one of the best trails in Canada and personally I would have to agree).

The pictures are from top (Crypt Lake) more or less back to bottom as follows. Enjoy.

The first is Crypt Lake itself.
The second is along the traverse across the ledge between the tunnel and the lake. The third is taken in the tunnel. The fourth is another alpine lake visible in the valley. The fifth is a view of Waterton Lake from the trail.
The sixth is a shot of a waterfall as one approaches Crypt Lake.

It should also be noted that a short side trip can be taken while on the Crypt Trail to Hell Roaring Falls. We opted to skip it on this trip as we are going back this summer to take our kids as far as the falls. About 4 kilometres up Crypt Trail one can veer off on a short trail to the falls. I'll send you some shots of that; I hear they are spectacular!

Directions:

Catch the water taxi in Waterton across Waterton Lake to the trailhead. The trailhead itself is well marked and it's all up-hill from there!

-Awesome natural topography
Downside -Miss the last boat home and you are camping at the dock for the night without supplies. Comment This hike is amazing. You start off on an easy hike through the winding forested trail. As the trail assends out of the trees though the difficulty begins to rise. Never is there a dull moment but the high light off the hike has got to be the narrow cliff face to the natural rock tunnel.
Be sure to catch the first boat across to the trail head in order to give yourself time to enjoy the hike. You can make it to end of the trail and back on the second boat but you need to hustle your way back down in order to catch the last boat back. Bring lots of water as it is a good climb in. Although you can refill your water bottles at the few creeks you cross at the top of the mountain, as it is ice cold glacier water from a nearby glacier without much worries of getting ill from the water.

Downside not for the weak. bring lots of water, cause i ran out on the way down. almost got dehydration. the temperature can change drastically, it was forecasted to be 22 and ended up being 35 by the time we began the exposed switchback climb. Comment recommended to everyone, just make sure ur in good shape

Great views and waterfalls, topping off with a beautiful view of half frozen lake, saw an avalanche while resting there. Downside A little too much snow and ice hiking (in June) for me.
By Rick from MFAPosted By: Rick from MFA  - Fri Oct 03 15:38:41 UTC 2008 Not Rated Question anyone know if there is a cabin to rent for one night anywhere on the Crypt Lake hiking trail (the one that starts at the Waterton Park Gate)?

just looking for something basic - clean, simple and quiet

the trail sounds great!

ANSWERS are in this forum:  cabin available?

Downside Having to take a boat ride ($15/person return in Sept 2007. for 3.34 km, 20 min ride) and being limited to their hours, plus of course the asinine straggler who is late returning and makes every body wait for him. Comment If visiting Waterton Lakes NP, this is a must-be-done hike, if the only hike you do during your visit.
As everybody else says, see Hell Roaring Canyon on the way back. This is a loop, so try to see the upper access to the trail on the wait up, so that you turn down it on the way down and not have to walk back up to the canyon.
By grassrootsinabPosted By: grassrootsinab  - Sun Jul 22 21:48:23 UTC 2007 Not Rated Upside This is possibly my favorite hike because it has it all...a boat ride, a shaded winding forest trail, a steep mountain-side climb, a cave, a scramble and a peaceful lake. Downside Gotta go in the early spring when the water is really flowing. Comment Awesome hike and yes, Hell Roaring falls is worth it...just do it on the way back to the boat...NOT on the way up!!

Downside No photos of Hell Roaring Falls...the best part of the hike! Looking forward to seeing the photos when you return to Hell Roaring Falls. Comment You are going to love Hell Roaring Falls. Someday I'd like to kayak then camp overnight so I could really soak in the beauty.
