For the winter of 2010, Des Pinache is a new addition to the front country trails around the Gite Du Mont Albert. It cuts and winds through the forest behind the info center, and loops up past some high spots to the south of the Gite for great views of Mont Olivine, Hog's Back, Mont Blanche, and Mont Albert.
It's rated moderate, and wisely so due to the steep climbs. While at low elevation, the trail crosses a few creeks making for nice variety. In fresh snow, you'll like your snowshoes, especially if they have heel bars. We visited during mid March and simply hiked the trail on the packed snow.
If you're staying at the Gite, or the near by huts, cottages or campground, this is one of the must do front-country trails, any time of the year. We did this along with Mont Olivine loop to the Serpentine shelter, all with ease over the duration of a day. Both these trails offer rewarding kodak moments during winter travel, and we would likely repeat them on a summer visit.
