This trail is rated at 4 mostly because of the spur trail to Florence Falls. It's 10km to gunsight Lake but 8km is in the forest with no real views but it is a nice easy walk. The first 2km is downhill which, of course, means that the last 2km of the day are uphill, a total of 650'. Not serious but not what you're really used to at the end of the day.
At the 2km point the trail crosses Reynolds Creek and is a good place to stop for a bit because the next 6km are all in the trees with the odd view of the St. Mary River and valley.
At 8km is the junction with the Florence Falls trail. It's only 1km to the falls but the trail is terribly overgrown. I'm not sure why they don't maintain this short trail but I will say it's well worth the effort of getting there. I would call this the most spectacular waterfall I've ever seen while hiking. Most groups tend to go to the falls on the way back from the lake when they know how tired they are.
The next 2km to the lake rises gently from the valley floor on a traverse of Fussilade Mountain. Here you are treated to views of numerous mountains, glaciers and another amazing waterfall - Sisika Falls, which would be worth visiting also but I don't know that it's possible.
Gunsight Lake is a popular backpacking destination as part of the Sun Road to LaKe MacDonald trail. This is the first of 3 campgrounds and sits at the bottom of Gunsight Pass.
The trailhead is at the Jackson Glacier Overlook on the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park.
