Don’t worry, it’s not that ‘Inspiration Point’, or maybe it is. But if it is, it’s a long walk for …you know. This is a very nice desert trail in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve just east of Scottsdale, Arizona. This is an excellent hiking area right on the edge of the city. There are 28 trails accessible from 9 trailheads.
This trail begins at the Gateway area off the Thompson Peak Parkway. Hikers begin with the short Saguaro Trail, then go left (shorter) or right (longer) on the Gateway Loop which connects with the Windgate Pass Trail. Inspiration Point is on this trail. Elevation gain is 1,000’, distance is 3 miles (one way).
The volunteers here have done a remarkable job of trail building and maintaining. The trails are rough and rocky but are well maintained. There are plenty of signs and they also provide a very clear trail map. The trails are quite busy, being so close to the city, but the farther you hike, the less busy it is. It’s a good place for a leisurely stroll or a good workout. The highest elevation gain in the area is 1360’ to Tom’s Thumb.
