Nestled against the flank of New Hampshire's Cannon Mountain, this year-round hut offers a spectacular view of the Franconia Range across a clear glacial tarn. The westernmost hut on the Appalachian Trail, Lonesome Lake Hut is an hour's hike from the road and the perfect place for families, novice hikers and snowshoers, or anyone seeking mountain views from the water's edge.
Lonesome Lake Trail: 1.5 miles, one hour. Snowshoes are recommended for this moderately steep trail, which sees much traffic. It is skiable only by intermediate to advanced backcountry skiers with skins.
Directions:
Lonesome Lake Hut, elevation 2760’: Accessible from the southbound lane of Route 93 in Franconia Notch with parking at Lafayette State Park. The Lonesome Lake Trail is a relatively easy 1.6 miles to the hut, takes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes, and has 950 ft. elevation gain. Alternate approaches include the Cascade Brook Trail (3.1 miles to the hut, approx. 2.5 hours).
