Milton' Town Forest surrounds Milton Pond, a quaint small pond far enough away from everything you can only hear yourself and the breeze. An excellent swimming hole, the forest is a great place to see deer, porcupine (from a distance!) and fantastic place to bird watch. The pond is also home to some good fishing. After a rain, watch your feet: red efts like to hang out right in the trail! There are also some moose lurking around, we found some of their rubbings on a beech tree (see picture!)
A trail encircles the entire pond. From the road, follow trail across the street from parking next to small barn and south through fields (the trail should be mowed out). Hug the side of the field, and take the first fork to the right along some old apple trees. Once you enter a forest you'll come to another fork with a sign...go left! Right will take you down an old, buggy and muddy logging road. Soon you will emerge at the top of the pond.
The area can be quite buggy, so head nets and spray are suggested in the spring. The southeastern corner, with a little bushwhacking back from the pond, will bring you to several large boulders that have some climbing potential if cleaned and to a large swath of 120'+ Cottonwood trees that were all blown down during a hurricane. It's really cool to climb all over those guys!
Directions:
Take Milton Exit off of I-89 to Milton. Drive through town, and take right at Annie's Irish Pub. Follow this road for a few miles until you see a large barn on your left. Park in front of this barn.
