This trail allows you to forget that you are on Long Island. There are nice up and down sections that feel similar to a lower Catskill hike. Be aware that things can get crowded on the weekends. As a negative to the trail there is no way to loop it - you need to back track or ferry a car to either end.
You can hike this trail (total 26 miles) in many different sections. The size of the section can vary due to what road crossing you use to leave the car. From 25A in Cold Spring Harbor to 25 (Jericho) in Woodbury is about 6 miles.
Other common stopping areas are Bethpage State Park and Sunrise Highway or Montauk Highway (in Massapequa).
Directions:
The northern trail head is in Cold Spring Harbor off rout 25A (near the cold Spring Harbor Library).
The southern trail head is in Massapequa near the massapequa park train station.
