Beautiful snowshoeing, xcountry skiing or hiking along Toby Creek at Panorama Ski Resort near Invermere, BC.
Start at the Greywolf Golf shop (the Nordic Centre in winter) and head west along the snowshoe or XCountry trails. Often, these trails overlap, and snowshoers should be careful to avoid getting in the way of xcountry skiers or walking on the classic skiing tracks.
Because of the hardpacked snow on Feb 22, 2010, we simply attached our YakTrax to our boots and walked, all the way to the end of Barbour Creek Trail (see photo). The return trip, including slightly different route, with detour to the Hale Hut on the way back (see photos) was 17 kms. Great views along the way, a pleasant walk along Toby Creek (see photos), total elevation for the day was 360 m.
Directions:
From Hwy 93/95 and Althamer Road (the road into Invermere, at the lights and Tim Horton's), head west, go 2.6 km, turn right onto Panorama Rd part way up the hill just before arriving in Invermere, drive 19 km to Toby Creek Bridge as you arrive at Panorama, turn left onto the bridge and follow the road 2 km to the Greywolf Golf Centre (the Nordic Centre in winter), and park there. Buy a tix, get directions and a map in the Nordic Centre.
Head west along the golf centre deck, go under the next Toby Creek bridge, and follow the trail. At the far end of the circuit (approx 4.5 km), turn right onto Barbour Creek trail (#8) and go west to the end, another 4 km.
