My other favorite day hike is to Pharaoh Mountain near Schroon Lake. This 13-14 mile loop will lead you across a couple of small backwoods ponds and marshes. The upper part of the climb is steep and as of late, has been covered with fallen trees from the heavy ice and snow. The peak view is gorgeous. You get a great 360 view because this is the highest point for many miles. The high peaks a very visible on clear days. The backside of the mountain is very pristine, overlooking Pharaoh Lake, which can be hiked to and camped at for a relaxing rest. I recommend heading north after the lake to see the vast marshes that are usually inhabited by a variety of birds. Be careful though, this is most certainly bear country.
