Pickle Jar Lakes, there are four paternoster lakes the first offers good fishing. There were an number of campers and people fishing.

You don't access these lakes from Pickle Jar Creek, but rather Lantern Creek. Follow trail until it reaches a fork on the ridge about 500 meters from the first lake. You have choice of going higher over rocks and scree or down to Pickle Jar Creek and up along the creek. At this time I'd recommend the high route as there has been a significant blow down along Pickle Jar Creek.

Directions:

Highway 40 at Lantern Creek day use area. Trail starts on opposite (east) side of highway slightly north of day use area.

I've heard that there is no actual campsite, but that people camp out there anyways. Can you hang a hammock anywhere? Any and all information I can get about camping at, or near Picklejar Lakes would be appreciated. Thanks!

Staying a few days at the lakes would be the way to go, making a couple day hikes and just enjoying this piece of paradise. Downside Be prepared if you go late fall...the last section to the lakes after making Lineham Ridge is on the northern slope, meaning possible winter conditions. The lakes freeze over early and melt late. Also, the upper sections of the climb toward the ridge can be quite slippery when wet. Packing crampons wouldn't be a bad idea. Comment This is a very popular hike, for good reason. It's not terribly long and very rewarding. Best done in summer; remember that highway 40 is closed from Dec 1 to June 14. Take your fly rod, the fishing on the lakes is renowned. Barbless hooks only please ;)

loose dirt tracks in places make it slippery
Comment we hiked this with 2 kids aged 3yrs and 5 yrs. Both managed it on their own however was a hard day for them both. needed to hold onto their hands whilst taking int he steep portions of the hike and the slag heap towards the end. both enjoyed it but tough going for the little troopers!

The views on the way up, as well as at the actual lakes are stunning. Well worth the work. A challenging hike that rewards you at the end. Downside If you are camping and hiking up all your gear the hike is more challenging than "moderate". Almost the entire hike is up hill, with a few parts that are pretty steep. Comment Great camping at a semi-busy trail. All-in-all a wonderful hike and a great place to pitch a tent.

Easy access, most of trail is in good condition Downside Not much, parts of trail are getting chewed up due to wet conditions Comment Hiked June 25th, some really wet sections with mud.. still snow bands at first summit and between lakes.. second lake still had ice, third and fourth same. Super panoramic views, nice lakes.

Views of the Elk range on the way down

These are really plesant lakes with PLENTY of fish. You could almost catch fish in a pickle jar here.
Downside The campsite is unofficial so there are no tables, fire pits, or toilets. Comment An excellent spot to enjoy fishing and the mountain lakes.

Comment Not a great deal of downed wood for fire, enough to make a small fire but you wanna be smart about not wasting to much wood.

Comment Excellent, only location in Alberta with native Cutthroat Trout. Great site fishing. Had poor weather - heavy snow (in August!!!) but still managed to land 5 fish. Also its only 8 clicks return, not 10.
