Only recently added to the official list of x-c ski trails in Jasper National Park
, the Pyramid Lake Fire Road is only a short drive from the town of Jasper. The road is groomed with a classic track and skating lane and is designated as dog friendly.
After an easy kilometre to the outlet of Pyramid Lake the trail begins climbing (130 metres in 2km) to a small marsh where it loops around before the trip down the hill. The marsh is on your left and is accessed via a narrow opening through a screen of trees. The marsh is exposed to the wind and so far the tracks have been blown-in more often than not. Sometimes you'll find skier set tracks continuing up the fire road to Pyramid Mountain or the Palisade Lookout but be aware that the way is steep and eventually the potential for avalanches, real. If you do push on I'd advise turning around at the bridge over the canyon for a 10km return trip.
The best map to take along is Parks Canada's free Winter Trails brochure, which is the only current publication that shows cross-country ski trails in the Jasper National Park. Yet if a topo you must have then take along Gemtrek's 1:100000 "Jasper and Maligne Lake"or the 1:50000 government topo "83D16 Jasper". The Friends of Jasper
have both maps.
Jasper National Park posts a weekly cross-country ski report on the web during the winter months. http://www.pc.gc.ca/apps/tcond/cond_e.asp?oPark=100244

From the town of Jasper travel 7km up the Pyramid Lake Road past Patricia and Pyramid Lakes to the parking lot and gate at the end of the paved road.
