The Seven Summit Trail, true to its name, is a 30.4 km ridge ride that passes within a half hour ascent of seven major peaks in the Rossland area. Traversing above the well known Red Resort ski hill, the trail takes you past the treeline on a breathtaking alpine challenge. This newly constructed alpine trail was completed as of September 2004 and finishing touches will continue this summer and beyond.
Above the "Alpine City" of Rossland, the Seven Summit trail is the essential back country trail of the Monashee Mountains. Traveling south will allow for an initial elevation gain with an overall descent for the rest of the way. Starting at the north trail head parking lot at Nancy Greene Summit (21.2 km from Rossland), the ride will land you at the12 km sign up the Old Cascade highway. Turn left onto this old settler's route to take it back to downtown Rossland for a round trip (13.8 km). The north and the south trailheads have easy vehicle access.
Alternatively, the trail can be assimilated with the Dewdney trail at the south end of Record Ridge where it meets up with the old Cascade Highway. Instead of hanging a left onto the old Cascade Highway continue straight past it for an added 5.4 km and an extra 700m of elevation drop. This will land you down highway 22, 3km north of the American boarder near Patterson.
A light and agile full-suspension or hard tail bike will best suit this 4-6 hour ride (some lugging required). There is a "leave no trace" policy and there are no official rest stops, so bring plenty of water and supplies (especially when exposed to the alpine sun and winds).

UpsideIncredible views and lots of outstanding technical terrain. You are left with a sense of accomplishment as this is not your typical ride - truly an EPIC !
DownsideLots of climbing at altitude - this trail is relentless in its demand to conserve enough energy to supply the needed power to climb. No climb by itself is difficult - but as they keep coming your fitness will be tested.
Comment5 of my closest riding buddies and I decided to take a trip to Seven Summits in 2008 after it was named Trail of the Year. We trained and thought we were more than ready for anything this EPIC had to throw at us. Well we did miscalculate the demand and severity of this trail. While we did the entire Trail in less than 7 hours it was extremely demanding to climb and climb and climb at altitude. Our group ages from 35 - 53 and we have done just about every kind of terrain and Epic - This is one of a kind. Be prepared for the sheer joy and pain that this unbelievable Trail will provide. When you are done you will be happy to claim 7 Summit Trail on your resume of EPIC rides !

UpsideFantastic views of the Columbia Valley and surrounding peaks
DownsideThe initial climb of 700 m is by no means the end of the climbing. Be prepared for several more climbs of 100 to 200 m.
CommentThe trail is very rough in places and relentlessly technical. There's very little smooth flowy trail, but that said, this is a fun ride. Take more food and water than you think you will need. I recommend 4 litres of water. Insect repellant can be handy if you stop in shady places. I did the ride in 7 hours in 2008 but took 9 in 2009 because of a crash at slow speed.

UpsideFantastic scenery, great place to enjoy the outdoors. Going from North to south the trend is downhill
DownsideSingle track, it's grueling ride. Only made it as far as Red Mountain and had to go down the ski hill. Climbing any more with pulled hamstring was not an option.
CommentIt took 7 hours to do 20 km. The uphill required substantial pushing.
