Starts on the old Cabot Trail road bed and heads out to a point quite high above the Atlantic Ocean, the first part of the trail is well marked and groomed. The trail can go around in a circle, the back part being just a narrow track. This trail goes through a prime moose area and whales can be seen from the high areas overlooking the ocean. * Note: no dogs are allowed on this trail.
This trail is one of the "must do" hikes of the Cape Breton Highlands, with a winding trail that delivers view after view, and, a distance that will make even the ardent hiker hungry for some seafood chowder after a full day's hike.
Directions:
After crossing the Canso Causway look for signs leading to The Cabot Trail or take route 19 to Margaree Centre, turn left on the Cabot Trail go to the top of French Mountain and follow signs from there. It's in the national park, and there is an information centre where one can find hiking and sea kayaking bools for the area, natural history, and a friendly parks staff.

Upsidemoose everywhere, the first part is very easy with a wide gravelled path and boardwalks, the other side of the circle is more difficult.
DownsideBe prepared for rapid weather changes, fog can come in very quickly, sometimes the trail is closed because of bears.
CommentI have hiked this trail just about every year (sometimes 2 or 3 times a year) for 35 years, It used to be called The "Jumping Brook" trail and didn't have any boardwalks then. It never fails to show me somthing different every time I go there. An awesome trail.

UpsideIf you get out of your car only once around the Cabot Trail, this is the place. Easy access from the highway and a rather flat route make it popular for all ages and abilities. There are several boardwalks along the way and optional stairs at the terminus. Here you can see the Magdalen Islands on a clear day.
DownsideThere is a vertigo factor. The climax at the end where mountain meets ocean is truly breath-taking but can be unnerving. It could use a few handrails.
CommentI proposed to my (now) wife on this trail. We have gone back almost every year since then (1998) and ALWAYS see moose.
