UpsideGreat trail. Challenging, but a beginner would feel at home. Once you get to the end of the mule mt. loop, it's free camping and seasonal permit hunting. Nice cool hike in the afternoons, a great escape from local heat in the summertime. Also great during the wintertime. Really great (and sometimes, intense) bike trails. Also good if you're training for packing. Trails well-maintained.
DownsideSome of the trails are a bit narrow, so keep your ears and eyes open for downhill bikers (esp where the trail is next to a drop.)
CommentThis is by far one of my favorite trails in redding, due to the fact that its just outside of town, and it isn't crowded. I regularly train with a weighted pack and often do some trail running here. However I have been dive-bombed by bikers from time to time. Also the trail itself has a few good spots to look around, but the north side is kind of hard to veiw, if you dare to make the fairly steep hike to mule mt. peak... I HIGHLY suggest it, it provides an AMAZING veiw. Go up from the picnic area (or go around, but it's a total detour). Also, If you use the shooting range, please clean up your shells and garbage, I'd like to continue using it.
