Vantage Peak is an easy day hike with a short scramble at the top for the summit. Great year-round destination (ski it in winter) with amazing views of Joffre, Matier and Howard.

The SW ridge is made up of a lot of smaller cols and ridges. Pick your way around the trees and cliffs (and/or scramble up them) for a zigzag hike. There are quite a few cairns on the way to let you know you're on the "most travelled" route if the heavy scrambling and rock climbing makes you nervous.
The route along the ridge is fairly easy year-round, but looks much shorter than it actually is due to the cliffs. Be sure to check out runs in the NW bowl if you're on skis. The snow is amazing there and the NW aspect is protected from many of the SW storms that can suddenly blow up.
Due to a bum knee, I opted to descend down the SSW aspect, which made for a quicker descent. The 4 hour time is a little heavy on the time up and light on the time down, but a good general guide.
Directions:
Vantage Peak is found in the Joffre Group, at the south headwaters of Cerise Creek and east of the Matier-Vantage col.
- North on Hwy 99 to Pemberton
- Logging road from Cayoosh Pass to Cerise Creek
- Hike from Cerise Creek approach to the Matier-Vantage col (~5 hours)
- Vantage west ridge is directly across from the Twin One Glacier

Downsideboring trail, tedius scramble
CommentI wouldn't bother going past the col in summer. This would be a much better ski trip. The views from the summit are the same as from the col and the scrambling between the col and the summit is below average. I did take my dog on this one and have to stress wanderlust's comments that this is only for dogs that are not too heavy to carry. Lifting a 90lb dog over my head on sketchy footing was not fun.

CommentThe standard winter ascent of Matier is via its north ridge. Crossing the head of the Anniversary Glacier can be tricky in early winter. An alternate less direct approach is via a ridge heading SW away from the cabin towards Mt Joffre. A high line can be picked through small cliffs at the top of the ridge.

UpsideSuper-easy 1.5 hr hike up Cerise Creek trail and excellent cabin. Up close and personal with a couple of substantial glaciers.
DownsideBit of route-finding needed on upper slopes... too many people have beaten paths down too many awkward descents.
CommentThis is a great hike for dog owners - we brought two and there were several up there. A few Chief-esque moments for the animals... but if your dog's not too heavy to carry, bring 'em along.
