Description
NTS Map:92C13. This trail is actually just 5 minutes outside of Ucluelet, and will eventually be linked to the Wild Pacific Trail. The trail is easy, especially at the beginning, and suitable for families with younger children. The trail had been upgraded somewhat the last time we were there, mainly involving the muddy sections. It takes about 20-25 min (more if with children) to get to Halfmoon Bay from the parking lot, but add time coming back because of the many steep stairs.

It's a beautiful hike on a gentle trail through cool, shady forest. The remains of an old corduroy road can be seen along the trail, and there are typically not many people around. The trail splits into two branches, the left to Halfmoon Bay. The right branch leads to Florencia Bay, but the last time we were there, Florencia Bay was inaccessible by this route. After the split in the trail, the stairs and ramps begin.

Halfmoon Bay is a small, secluded cove with a sandy, steep beach and beautifully coloured water. Most of the beach disappears at high tide, so timing your visit to coincide with low tide is suggested. At low tide, many tidal pools become exposed and beautiful examples of intertidal life abound. To reach the tide pools, walk to the left at the end of the stairs to the rocks along the edge of the cove.

One of the best things about Halfmoon Bay is that it is secluded, and we have only ever seen, at most, two other people on the beach. We have never visited in the summer, however, and the beach is likely busier during the warmer months. Lastly, the beach is a nice one to take kids to, because they can roam along the sand while staying visible at all times.

Directions:

The trail is 2 km south of the Tofino-Ucluelet junction, or about 5 minutes outside of Ucluelet. Coming from Ucluelet, turn left onto Willowbrae Road, a narrow gravel track, and the parking lot and trailhead are at the end of the road (not far).

Upside:Fantastic Trail to Halfmoon and Florencia Bays,Great Boardwalks and Stairs,NO Pay parking!
Downside:The Trail to Halfmoon Bay is a little muddy and the Boardwalk to the Beach is getting old,Be Carefull going down to Beach
Comment:You will not believe your eyes when you see Halfmoon Bay, The Beach is Fantastic! We usually have it to ourselves,Florencia Bay Beach is much longer and more rugged but you may see a Whale or two if you watch close, I have seen Huge Salmon right in the surf jumping to escape seals! My friend found a Native Artifact in April while Whale Watching, keep your eyes pealed!
