The section of track from Summerland South to Trout Creek has been recreated and has a replica Kettle Valley Rail Road passenger train that runs in the summer months. Past Trout Creek the KVR trail runs on top of clay cliffs overseeing Okanagan Lake before dipping down into the city of Penticton. Leaving Vancouver Place toward Naramata expect to pass over Andrew McCulloch trestle with some beautiful views of the Okanagan Valley. Between these two communities there are nine little wineries and vineyards to take in along the way.
Penticton can be used as a hub to access three sections of the Kettle Valley Rail trail. To get to Summerland from Penticton using this trail, park on Green Mountain Rd, west of Hwy 97 just after crossing the Okanagan River Channel. Follow the Channel pathway north to where this trail intersects the KVR. An old bridge over the channel which is now removed makes this location quite distinct. At this point turn west which will take you to Summerland. Traveling south will take you to Kaleden.
While in Penticton to travel to Naramata via the KVR trail, turn onto Westminster Ave off Hwy 97 and continue through town up Vancouver Ave. Turn left onto Vancouver Place.
Starting your hike from Naramata the best place to park your vehicle is at the junction of Smethurst Road and the KVR off Naramata Rd.

There is an additional network of mountain biking and hiking trails called Three Blind Mice, which adds some optional excitement between the Vineyards south of Naramata.

UpsideSome very beautiful views .. with a few nice little, out of the way camping spots with an amazing view of the Peachland/Westbank/Kelowna area from across the lake on top of Okanagan Mtn. Getting ice cream at chute lake was a real bonus... especially from having to climb the detour route. Camping is available at chute lake if you are not the type to just pitch a tent where ever you end up for the night. The weather was beautiful (we went sept long weekend). A challenging ride... a 2% grade might not seem like much... but it does start to wear on you after a while. however it is pretty much a straight downhill ride from chute lake on. Some nice history along the route, the Adra tunnel was quite nice... and some wine tasting opportunites nearer to Penticton. :) And I can imagine that this year the forest will be beautiful once all the old burn from that area has re-grown. DownsideWhen we went all the tressles were not rebuilt, so were forced to take the McCullough forest service road down then back up Myra canyon. It was quite steep in some parts.. very rough terrain, absolutely nothing interesting to look and and it was quite long as well. It is virtually impossible to ride up it with a loaded bike, or even without a loaded bike, so we were forced to push our bikes up the mtn side. Also places to just pitch a tent for the night are fairly sparse on top of the mtn. Had we not taken the small crater filled, cow puckie pasture we found... we didn't see another spot that would have been adequate until you hit Chute lake. CommentAll in all a nice ride. Went from McCullough through to Osoyoos. approx 120 kms I think give or take. Riding down the canyon was a lot of fun, but then paid the price when we got to the top on the other side of the canyon and started actually riding our bikes again.. that in all the speed coming down my partner broke his pannier rack forcing my bike to carry his load. Then with the extra 40 lbs of weight on my pannier rack coupled with the rough ride getting back from the detour route along the old FSR road just outside of Naramata my pannier rack failed. I would certainly do this trip again, however you couldn't pay me enough to go back up the detour route. Wait until all of the tressle's are rebuilt.
