Considering Widgeon Lake is not easily accessible, it would be prudent to be prepared for a bear encounter, and know what to do in that situation.
A simple precaution is to wear a bear-bell on your pack, and bear spray is good as an emergency deterrent. If you're making noise then bears will generally hear you and leave the area. It can be hard for them to hear close to creeks and rivers, though, so just be observant and aware as you are going along. The last thing you want to do is surprise a bear.
Check out this website for more info on what to do should you encounter a bear: http://www.env.gov.bc.ca/bcparks/explore/misc/bears /bearsaf.html
