I've taken my dogs on various sections on this trail without any problems.

Unlike the west coast trail, there are no ladders or long sets of stairs to worry about.
However there is a suspension bridge that your dog may feel uneasy on, totally safe though as it has mesh sides.

Keep in mind, black bears are occasionally encountered year round, bear bells are recommended, and don't let your dog run ahead of the group.

I'm assuming that your dog is outdoorsy and has no problem with a rough, rooty and muddy trail though... have fun!

Awesome! Thanks!

Yes, my dog is a veteran hiker, but having done the WCT, I wondered if the JFT was similar. Thanks so much for your help! I guess we are going to hike the JFT this summer!

I did this hike a couple weeks ago and saw a few people with their dogs, so I'd say yes, as long as your dog is in decent shape. There's a couple steep spots that get pretty muddy.

Hi,

My son and I hiked half this trail a couple summers ago with one of my dogs. It was no problem at all for him except one bridge that he would not cross as it was high and had large holes as it was a metal type mesh. We had to carry him across that one and he weighs 70 lbs! Otherwise he just made it all look so easy:-)
