How do you download GPS data on those sites? and is it reliable? Does it work with any GPS device? if so what brand do you recommend?

Hi Lucas,

If you are asking about how to download GPS data from trailpeak, it's fairly simple. We support (primarily) the GPX format, and, all you have to do is click "download GPS" in any trail. However, you have to have GPS credits in your account to get this data free, and, you do that by giving some -- you get 3 download credits for every 1 you upload. If you prefer not to contribute, you can support trailpeak by purchasing 12 download credits for $25, and we feel this provides two options for users, while allowing trailpeak a means to help cover hosting. As for reliability, that is up to the user to ascertain, however, since we support the wiki format, if GPS data is bad, we tend to get reports from other users, and we always have our GPS editor and regional editors have a look before allowing any contributions. Hope that helps.

Kurt

Yes it was helpful. Is that the format that most GPS devices use?

Yes GPX has become a defacto standard that most GPS software supports, I am thinking of Mapsource from GARMIN and many others. There is also G7TOWIN (free) but likely your GPS came with some software, and you can google up various online conversion utilities that will transform GPX format.
