Regarding trail Juan de Fuca trail near Victoria, BC

Hi,
A few of us are thinking of doing the JFT and I understand to watch out for the tide levels while passing through to ensure you don't get stuck. However, the site says Bear and Chin beach are beach campsites... I assume these are sites near the beach, and not directly on? Meaning I don't have to watch tides at 1 am? I've checked out a few hikers picture/posts and they seem to be off the beach into the tree's slightly... but figured I'd check as the weekend were going is high tide at night. Thanks for any info you can provide

Hi,

Bear beach and Chin beach both have literally on-beach camping, but both also have some spots that are in the woods above any high tide lines, winter included I'd wager.

Our first run through there was a spot in the woods available at Bear, but not at Chin, and then second time through no woods spots at Bear but got one at Chin.

There's plenty of room to camp above the high tide line on the beach at both though, just use common sense to find the line. We did see someone get swamped during the night on our first trip through, they had camped real low on Bear near the first stream outlet if coming from the south.

There's not a LOT of in the woods spots on Bear though, like 4 or 5 I think? A few more at Chin in a couple spots. Depending on the time of year it may be no contention.

Have fun!
