Thinking of heading out to give this trail a go. Done a lot of hiking and back country camping in Alberta. Wondering what the trails are typically like around this time of year (busy, slippery, wet, etc.). Also wondering what type of gear people recommend. I like to cut my pack weight down as much as I can so eliminating things I wont need would always help. How many days should this take, to really enjoy the trail and surroundings? Was debating if I should take the bus from Port Renfrew back to China Beach (where I will likely park?) or hike it back to China Beach...recommendations?

We hiked it last September. Nice hike. I recommend gators, there is intermittent mud and water. Rain gear is probably a good idea. I would leave a car in Port Renfrew and start the hike at China beach. A guy named Evan is the lot operator (I have his card will add info when I get home today) I don't think you are allowed to leave a car in China beach parking lot over nights. My cell is 306-292-1897 if you want to talk.

Hi, we hiked this not last year the year before - we did it in 3 days. we ended up taking two cars and parked one at botanical beach then travelled back to china beach to start. we left our car at china beach no problem - lots of people had done so. Day 1 we hiked to Chin beach - stopped at bear for lunch then continued and camped at Chin. I would HIGHLY reccommend staying a night at chin beach -(it was a long long day and we were pooped when we got there) but it was breathtaking! we got there just before dark but some time would be nice to explore and relax. we then hiked an easy day to sombrio beach (which especially in the summer has LOTS of people and lots of campers). Beautiful beach but not as excluded and remote as chin. We then hiked the last day to the end - which made for a long day but is EASY trails especially compared to the first two days. LOTS of mosquitos on this part of the trail as its very overgrown and tight trails - walk fast! If we were to do it again we'd go over 3 nights and stay at Bear Beach the first, Chin the second, Sombrio the third. or vise versa. the reason we started at China was because that part you have to watch the tide tables and it just worked better with our schedule since we didnt know what speed we'd be hiking at. we did not have wet weather BUT we did it in september after nice weather. right now we've seen ALOT of rain so 100% bring rain gear and boots..... gets cold at night too! Sorry for typos on my cell. let me know if you want any more advice!

Awesome thanks for the tips.

Couple other questions:

7 days/6 nights long enough to hike both ways? (start and end at China Beach)

Debating between a 2 man tent or a hammock set up (bug net and fly) but not sure if there will be enough trees to set up at beach sites. If tenting, will standard pegs work or will I need a set for soft ground?

Do I need to pay for parking at China Beach or identify my vehicle in anyway so it doesn't get towed?

Any other tips or gear recommendations?
