Regarding trail Skyline Trail near Jasper, AB

Hi

We just booked a 3-weeks trip to Canada next year September (coming from Belgium).

We plan on doing the skyline trail in 3 days.

When is the latest to make a reservation for the campsites, since for now we still don't have any idea on which days we will do the Skyline Trail. Is April 2017 still fine, or is this too late?

Can anyone provide us with some infromation about night temperatures on the trail, so we can bring the right stuff to sleep?

Thanks a lot
Yannick

Hi Yannick.

Glad you‘re coming to Canada. Skyline is beautiful and we‘ll worth the trip but my advice to you is be prepared. It‘s the mountains, and weather can change in an instant. Pack waterproof shells (top and bottom) and pack layers including fleece and light puffy cell jacket as well as warm underlayer. We did the hike in mid August and we‘re hit by a snow storm as we approached the Notch. It snowed for 6 hours. So in short.....in September it will probably be quite cold at night. Temp around 0 deg C. Also....if you want to make the trip a little different, look into spending your second night at the Canadian Alpine Club shack about 1km from the Notch. It‘s about $135 a night but worth the warm bed and meal. It‘s also a fun experience. In regards to booking campsites....book early. Skyline fills up quick. You‘ll also need to book the shuttle bus to get to the trail head. Have fun and I hope Canada lives up to all your expectations.

< BR>Reservations open in January. I recommend making a reservation in January or latest February if you want to be sure. The most popular campgrounds tend to fill up very early. Remember, this is one of Canada's most popular trails, and the season to hike it is relatively short. Good luck! It's well worth all the effort!

< BR>Book in January to be sure. And pack for any weather! On my skyline trip this past summer we saw hail, rain, snow, and finished with +20 and sun! And pack bug spray.. we saw so many groups getting pelted by mosquitos, as they brought no spray

< BR>So when we did the skyline trail i booked about 4 months in advance and i was one of the last openings. However there were lots of cancelations and the majority of the people we met on the trail had booked less then a months in advance...but i wouldnt take the chance.

Also, its Canada's 150th birthday this year so all national parks are free, which i assume means will fill up much faster. Have fun and good luck!

< BR>Yeah, the 2017 season may be the season to hit all the less popular trails, as all the known trails will be even more used
