Newman Peak is a minor peak in Waterton Lakes National Park. I say 'minor' because it's a half hour diversion from the col that is the eastern terminus of Avion Ridge. It's fairly steep (I thought) and lots of loose scree (tough going up, fun coming down), but the views are well worth the trouble. Plus you get one more named peak under your belt.
The easiest approach to Newman Peak is from Goat Lake. There is a good trail to Avion Ridge from there. From the col, turn left for Avion Ridge, right for Newman Peak. Return the way you came or continue with Avion Ridge (separate listing on Trailpeak). Newman Peak only adds an hour to your day.
On this day we biked to the Goat Lake trailhead, which makes for a great, easy ride back to Red Rock Canyon.
