This is a 2 day backpacking trip from Highway 940, south of Highway 40, west to Fording Pass between Mt. Bolton and Mt. Cornwall. The trail begins along Baril Creek Trail, which for the first 7 km or so is a fairly boring walk along a logging road. A creek crossing with a makeshift bridge marks the start of more entertainment, including a few more creek crossings and the intersection of the Great Divide Trail just before reaching James Lake which is the choice place to camp. From here, it's another 4.5 km or so to Fording Pass, which varies between nice single track hiking, an access road, and a large, exposed scree-covered clearing. Fantastic views of Mt. Armstrong, Bolton, Cornwall, Baril Peak and Courcelette Peak surround you. There are two scrambles from here, up the north ridge of Mt. Bolton and the SE ridge of Mt. Armstrong. My mission was to check out these peaks, though high winds and snow prevented a summit attempt. Best done in summer to fall.
Drive 44 km west from Longview on Highway 541 to Highwood Junction, turn south on Highway 940 and drive about 3.5 km. Just a couple hundred meters past Baril Creek, the trail head parking is on the right side.
