This technically challenging out-and-back begins with a mellow 1.5-mile hike to the base of Cabezon Peak. The last half of the hike ascends 800 ferry with many scrambling over scree and some class 3 obstacles. The view from the top is one of the best in New Mexico from which you can view the Sandia Peak, Santa Fe mountains, and Mt. Taylor.
From Albuquerque, take Hwy 550 past San Ysidro for several miles until a sign points you down a road to the left. Head south on this road until you reach Cabezon Peak.
