After you leave St. Mary Falls, you climb gradually as you follow Virginia Creek on its way to join the St. Mary River. Along the way you will encounter several impressive waterfalls, but none to compare with the sheer size and enormity of Virginia Falls, as it cascades about 100'. You will hear the falls long before you see it.

The trail to Virginia Falls is a continuation of the St. Mary Falls trail in Glacier National Park.

Because of the volume of water and the drop, there is a lot of spray. Rocks, trails and bridges are slippery, so hang on to small children.

If you go in spring, like we did, when the falls are running the most, remember that you are in grizzly country. Make lots of noise, especially near the falls, which are quite loud.

Return the way you came.

Not too tough when you're starting out for the season either. Downside The spray coming off Virginia Falls can be a little cold if you're picnicing there. Comment We do this hike as our first every season and usually head up on the May long weekend. The bonus to this is Park admission is usually still free!
